This is my painting of the Cuckold Lighthouse signaling the entrance to Boothbay Harbor.
By the late 1800s, Boothbay Harbor was a large fishing and shipbuilding center. The western approach has been often treacherous due to a pair of islets off the southerly end of Southport Island known as "The Cuckolds." Although they were marked with a day mark in 1874, and a fog bell in 1892,the Cuckolds Lighthouse wasn't established until 1907. This Lighthouse is only accessible by water.
We had the good fortune to be invited onto the 88 ft Yacht -Lady G- while we were in Boothbay last week to play golf. We were the guest of Paul Coulomb who has devoted enormous resources and energy to help prepare Boothbay for the coming decade and beyond. We spent the day cruising the coast down to Harpswell .....had lunch at the The Dolphin.... and on the return I captured several photos of this very quaint Lighthouse which is my reference for this painting.
So when I decided to paint 6 of Maine's Lighthouses from my Studio here in Cape Elizabeth this summer, I had no idea that I would be so blessed to be so close to this treasured lighthouse.
I hope you enjoyed this backstory and the painting.
