When I retired I not only wanted to learn to paint but to also take up ocean sailing. We took sailing lessons and learned navigation skills in Sarasota. We purchased a Compac 24 named the Julie B to practice in the Bay and on the outside along Siesta Key.

Later we bought an all wooden 28 ft  Tumlarin named Iduna built in 1947 to sail in the more difficult Maine waters. A few years later we moved up to a 36 ft Nonsuch named Departure. This painting was inspired by Homer's "Diamond Shoal". It depicts Julia and I trying to stay off the rocks (ledges)...not only in our sailing but in our life as well.

After 12 years and three sailboats we retired from sailing and concentrated on Golf. A safer but more frustrating endeavor!!

Here is Winslow Homer's original painting......
